Dalai Lama Quote of the Day

“The fact that there is always a positive side to life is the one thing that gives me a lot of happiness.  This world is not perfect. There are problems.  But things like happiness and unhappiness are relative.  Realizing this gives you hope.”

Introduction to The Yellow Emperor’s Classic

yellow emperor ch Introduction to The Yellow Emperors Classic

In ancient times the Yellow Emperor, Huang Di, was known to have been a child prodigy. As he grew he showed himself to be sincere, wise, honest, and compassionate. He became very learned and developed keen powers for observing nature. His people recognized him as a natural leader and chose him as their emperor.

During his reign, Huang Di discoursed on medicine, health, lifestyle, nutrition, and Taoist cosmology with his ministers Qi Bo, Lei Gong, and others. Their first discussion began with Huang Di inquiring, “I’ve heard that in the days of old everyone lived one hundred years without showing the usual signs of aging. In our time, however, people age prematurely, living only fifty years. Is this due to a change in the environment, or is it because people have lost the correct way of life?”

Qi Bo replied, “In the past, people practiced the Tao, the Way of Life. They understood the principle of balance, of yin and yang, as represented by the transformation of the energies of the universe. Thus, they formulated practices such as Dao-in, an exercise combining stretching, massaging, and breathing to promote energy flow, and meditation to help maintain and harmonize themselves with the universe. They ate a balanced diet at regular times, arose and retired at regular hours, avoided overstressing their bodies and minds, and refrained from overindulgence of all kinds. They maintained well-being of body and mind; thus, it is not surprising that they lived over one hundred years.

“These days, people have changed their way of life. They drink wine as though it were water, indulge excessively in destructive activities, drain their jing—the body’s essence that is stored in the kidneys—and deplete their qi. They do not know the secret of conserving their energy and vitality. Seeking emotional excitement and momentary pleasures, people disregard the natural rhythm and order of the universe. They fail to regulate their lifestyle and diet, and sleep improperly. So it is not surprising that they look old at fifty and die soon after.

Times related to Organs in Chinese Medicine

Ever wonder why after a hard night of drinking you wake up early and cant go back to sleep for a little while?  If you are waking up between 1-3 am it could be because your liver qi is aggravated.

In TCM all organs are related to a time of day as listed below:

Lung Large Intestine Stomach Spleen heart Small Intestine Bladder Kidney Pericardium  San Jiao Gallbladder Liver
3-5 am 5-7 am 7-9 am 9-11 am 11am-1 pm 1-3 pm 3-5 pm 5-7 pm 7-9 pm  9-11 pm 11pm-1 am 1-3 am

Say every day you get very tired between 3-5 pm while your at work.  This can mean your bladder channel is not balanced correctly in your body with your other organ systems.

Or if you feel overly energized between 7-9 pm this means your pericardium is at its peak as it should be and you are reacting to all this qi moving.

What is important to remember is that this system does not indicate whether or not you have something wrong with your liver or your lungs.  That is NOT what Chinese medicine is about.  It can mean your organs are not working up to their best ability and that they are not balanced in a yin/yang sense to your body as a whole.

Start paying attention and keep a log of the time of days you feel the most menstrual cramps, or maybe the most depression and bring this log to your acupuncturist.  This can help them see what results you may be having week to week and maybe they can explain to you what your diagnosis is and why you may be feeling bloated and cramped every morning at 7am.

Fashionable Hemp

1025adkhak 150x150 Fashionable Hempddboxerbub 150x150 Fashionable HempI graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, so obviously Im very into designers and the way clothing fits, feels and wears.  Give me Galliano, Kors, and McCartney any day and Ill smile.  But just as much as i like looking good in my clothes, I also like the environment and want to feel good about what Im wearing and how its affecting the environment.  Thats why when Im in Boston I go to The Hempest on Newbury street. They have the best selection of hemp clothing that Ive ever seen.  The hemp fabric they use is top quality and the cut and fit of the clothing can put marc jacobs up to the challenge.  It definitely lives up to the name hippie chic.  You can also check out there website http://store.hempest.com

Some great gifts are the rainbow hemp flip flops and the hemp boxer shorts.

Thai massage and its benefits

A thai massage is a form of massage that has little deep tissue work involved and a lot of stretching.  It is referred to as the lazy persons yoga because you are on a table that is low to the ground or on the floor (though you could be on a massage table as well) and you are being assisted by your therapist into yoga poses.  Its great for people who work out because you are stretching with out using up your strength. A lot of times the therapist will also manipulate your body into different poses that will sometimes make your bones crack and this will  definitely adjust it into perfect alignment.

You leave feeling taller, lighter and like you just had a workout!

Check out Thai Privilage spa in soho and also i get many of mine at my college, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine for less money.

Spa Getaways

Standard HotelFor my birthday this year, I wanted to do an affordable spa weekend down in South Beach.  Since SoBe caters more towards parties and not towards wellness,  i couldn’t find anything right on the main strip.  I heard of the Standard Hotel from several sources and since I knew some of their other hotels like the Standard LA, and the Raleigh South Beach, I thought the service would be great. Well, they actually lost my reservation and what could’ve turned out to be a really bad situation was quickly fixed by the manager with an upgrade to their best suite for less then my original reservation price. The room was bare minimal and from what I saw on their website the charge is very expensive and if I had paid full price, I would have left and stayed elsewhere… at first, that is.  The room has an outside old-school bathtub and there are white curtains that suround it so that if you are in the tub no one can see in. That is not a full proof plan if it is windy though, as one night I was there the curtains were swinging all over the place!

Tongue Diagnosis in TCM

theory tongue Tongue Diagnosis in TCM

What can you tell by looking at a tongue? There are some acupuncturists who will not ask you any questions but say show me your tongue and through that and maybe a feel of your pulse will treat you.  The tongue can show  alot.  The tongue in chinese medicine represents 8 different organs;the kidney, and urinary bladder are up in the very back near your tonsils, in the middle is the stomach and spleen on your left side in the liver and the right side is the gallbladder. The front tip is your heart and above your heart is your lung. Imperfections in your tongue depending where they are can tell what organs are being affected.  Imperfections can mean a few things such as deep cracks, scallops (bumbs on the side), a pointed tip, if your tongue seems too wide or long for your body size.
