Times related to Organs in Chinese Medicine

January 10, 2009 – 9:06 am

Ever wonder why after a hard night of drinking you wake up early and cant go back to sleep for a little while?  If you are waking up between 1-3 am it could be because your liver qi is aggravated.

In TCM all organs are related to a time of day as listed below:

Lung Large Intestine Stomach Spleen heart Small Intestine Bladder Kidney Pericardium  San Jiao Gallbladder Liver
3-5 am 5-7 am 7-9 am 9-11 am 11am-1 pm 1-3 pm 3-5 pm 5-7 pm 7-9 pm  9-11 pm 11pm-1 am 1-3 am

Say every day you get very tired between 3-5 pm while your at work.  This can mean your bladder channel is not balanced correctly in your body with your other organ systems.

Or if you feel overly energized between 7-9 pm this means your pericardium is at its peak as it should be and you are reacting to all this qi moving.

What is important to remember is that this system does not indicate whether or not you have something wrong with your liver or your lungs.  That is NOT what Chinese medicine is about.  It can mean your organs are not working up to their best ability and that they are not balanced in a yin/yang sense to your body as a whole.

Start paying attention and keep a log of the time of days you feel the most menstrual cramps, or maybe the most depression and bring this log to your acupuncturist.  This can help them see what results you may be having week to week and maybe they can explain to you what your diagnosis is and why you may be feeling bloated and cramped every morning at 7am.
