Free Tibet

img 02531 150x150 Free Tibetimg 0077 150x150 Free TibetTraveling to India not only allowed me to see another set of values and lifestyle but i also gained a life long friend who i now consider my family. I met my friend kalsang in the strangest way.  i was walking through mcleod ganj with mike looking for a hairdryer. This has been a mission of mine for 3 previous days already but i was having no luck.  The air in the himilayas in august is muggy and thinck with fog.  It is monsoon season then as well so it rains alot. I have naturally curly hair and without a brush or hairdryer my hair is in knots that slightly resemble dredlocks.  It was becoming an emergency for me to have this hairdryer… (im joking.. alittle) .  I guess me and mike looked lost because we meet Kalsang, a buddhist monk and he says “are you lost? do you need help? ”

dsc 0178 300x200  Whats amazing about the himilayas is there is no form of entertainment in the traditional sense that you think of when going on vacation.  It would seem you would get bored quickly having no tv or tourist adventure packages, etc.  But i wasnt bored for even a minute. I would wake up , have my chai, and get dressed to walk into town.  The walk into town was a few miles both down and up hill.  It was very tiring and strenuous but i chose to do that daily because i was terrified of the tuk tuk’s ( the little motorized scooter cars).

dsc 0161 300x200 Flying domestic in India does not feel safe. I flew air deccan and it was a giant propeller plane that had no engine.  I feared my life for those entire 2 hours of flying.  It was worth it the moment i landed in the himilayas. Upper Dharamsala is where the dalai lama lives and where his temple is located. The actual city is called McLeod Ganj, and its divided into upper and lower dharamsala.  The first few nights there I stayed in a little hindi village called naddi.  WHen you arrive to mcleod ganj its not that quiet. Its actually a very crowded town filled with a mix of all different cultures.  Its Americans, Europeans, Tibetans, Monks, Chinese, Hindi, every culture, and religion living together as one in peace.  Its the most amazing view you can imagine.

A Journey to Enlightenment

A mother in the streets of India

A mother in the streets of India

I went on a spiritual journey this year to india.  It was a short trip but left a lifelong impression.  I realized how thankful i am for what i have and the little things in life we take for granted, like Water for instance.  Imagine if your day consisted of waking up and walking miles to get a bucket of clean water for your family.  Thats what really goes on.  I arrived in Delhi at midnight on august 20, Outside the airport looked like a west side nightclub with the crowd of people pushing and shoving, some doped up, some passed out.  I thought , this is the airport?? whats the rest of the city going to be like.  I was given advice to get a prepaid cab inside the airport to get to the hotel because many other drivers are known to take you elsewhere, rob you and leave you stranded on the highway.

Ear candles

A few years back i wanted to try ear candleing. I heard it was good to do once a year as a cleansing and renewing method. I looked into several spas that did it in manhattan and i was shocked to find them charging $60 and up (some places $100!).  The candles only cost $6-$10 for a pair.  I called around thinking ok, maybe there is more to the therapy then just using the candles for them to charge so much but there was not. I decided to purchase the candles and do it myself. I had a friend accompany me while doing it because there is fire involved and i wasnt sure really how to use them.  It’s actually very simple. You light the bigger end of the cone on fire and the candle works as a suction cup to take the wax out of the ear.  You have to keep your head tilted to one side and make sure if you have long hair its tied back and away from the fire. You should also have water nearby in case something goes wrong and the fire gets out of hand. I experienced this first hand but it was due to carelessness.  Also you should have a pair of scissors to keep clipping the big end of the cone.  You can find these directions on the box.

Tanning while preventing wrinkles

I am a sun worshipper.  I am healthy is almost every other aspect of my life, but I am dedicated to the sun and I love my tan.  I love it so much I try to keep it all year round by going to the tanning salon.  Yes, I fake and bake.  I know it’s a horrible addiction and habit but I feel so good with a tan and I just can’t stop.

My acupuncturist, a few years back, of course told me it was bad to go and that I should stop. But then ALL my doctors from my general practitioner to my facialist have told me that and I don’t listen.  So my acupunturist stressed that IF im going to continue to expose myself to the sun i have to find a way to compensate and protect my skin from spots, wrinkles and aging.

Diabetes, a new epidemic

There are 170 million people living with diabetes worldwide.  The U.S. alone accounts for 20.8 million of those recorded cases.  It is important to know that there are two types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2.  The epidemic that is affecting our country is type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is a disorder where not enough insulin is produced by the body.  NOTE: Insulin is a hormone that is produced in pancreas and helps regulate glucose levels in the body.  Type 1 diabetes can be due to a virus or autoimmune disorder in which the body does not recognize an organ as its own and attacks it.  The organ that the body attacks is the pancreas. In type 1 the body basically stops making insulin so therefore an injection of insulin is needed daily.   It is most commonly diagnosed before the age of 30, and this type of diabetes only affects 5 to 10% of the population.

A New Year

img 01552 225x300 A New YearToday is the day we all make our new years resolutions.  Lose weight, eat healthy, save money,  etc.  Its also a day we should be thinking of maing ourselves better people and striving to acheive our goals. We should think of others and how we can help them.  With Obama as president  we are looking at a year of change for the better.

2008 has been quite a dramatic year with the collapse of major companies on wall street leading to an unemployment rate of our country that increases daily. People who have their jobs are worrying they wont have them  in 2009.  Even my friends who are very well off have stopped spending money in fear of what is to come in the next year.  Its a time of panic, stress and depression…. but it doesnt have to be.

What is Qi

For years my asian friends casually would throw around the word qi to describe everything from my painful menstrual cramps to my lushful hangovers.  I never knew what it meant but i assumed it was energy so to speak and they agreed that was what they knew it to mean.

The truth is there is no way to really describe the meaning of qi.  It is energy in a way, but it is more then just that. It is a life force that keeps balance in the universe.  When things are unstable in our life and our doings our qi is unbalanced.  It also has a deep tie in to yin and yang and the balance of the forces.

Lately, ive heard the word thrown around alot, especially with the increasing trend of holistic medicine, so now when you hear the word qi, you can look at it from another angle of just energy. Use it to evaluate your qi:  your emotional state, your mental state, your physical state, and your relationships with both yourself and others.

Long Live Pizza!

 Long Live Pizza!

Who doesnt love pizza. Even my doctor has said ” pizza is healthy, its a balanced diet” then he backtracked and said ” well… its probably healthier without so much cheese.” Who is he kidding? Pizza isn’t healthy. Its filled with carbs, and sugary sauce and lots of cheese, and not to forget who can only have one slice!? Well Cafe Viva in the east village (and the upper west side) is the answer.  Its actually healthy! .. And tasty! You can choose from dairy free and vegan alternatives to gluten-free options! And in case your taking that someone who frowns upon too healthy, they also offer  ”regular” dairy pizza  with cheese such as mozzarella and goat.  Its a win/win situation for all.
